Students who are attending a class at one of our physical classrooms are required to bring a qualifying laptop to class with them to use to connect with Remote Desktop to a virtual server we will provide.

Students who are attending a Live Online class will also need to have a qualifying computer, whether laptop or desktop.

Training Computer Requirements

For Non-Technical People

  1. For physical classroom training, you must bring a laptop to class that has a WIFI network adapter
  2. For Live Online training, you must have a computer available that is connected to the Internet via a cable-modem or better connection and able to use outbound HTTPS protocol.
  3. The qualifying computer MUST be running one of these operating systems: Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista  with at least Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  4. You do not need to install any additional software on your laptop in preparation for any of our classes, and no significant changes will be made to your laptop.
  5. You can verify that your computer will work in class by performing the connection test on this page.

For Technical People

We employ two technologies to enable you to truly experience SharePoint hands-on.

  • The first is Microsoft Remote Desktop Gateway. This enables you connect to the desktop of your lab machine that runs on our servers.
  • The second is Microsoft Hyper-v for lab machine isolation and virtualization.

Through the use of these two technologies, all of the actual processing is done on our servers, not your laptop. You are simply sending your mouse clicks and keystrokes to our server, which passes back the screen images to your laptop. So very little “laptop horsepower” is necessary. Here is the bare minimum we expect in terms of the specifications of your laptop:

  • It needs to be running Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista with at least Service Pack 1 (SP1) so that Remote Desktop Connection client is available and compatible with Remote Desktop Gateway.
  • For physical classroom training classes, it needs to have a WIFI adapter – 802.11g or faster. The network adapter needs to be set to pick up an IP address, and DNS server addresses, automatically (DHCP).
  • For Live Online training, you must have a computer available that is connected to the Internet via a cable-modem or better connection and able to use outbound HTTPS protocol.
  • The student needs to have local administrator rights on the laptop. (So we can disable Internet-blocking software or browser settings, if necessary.)
  • Internet proxy software, VPN software, and firewall software should be disabled prior to coming to class. Anything that blocks Internet access usually also blocks the ability of the laptop to connect by Remote Desktop Gateway to our servers.

You can verify that your computer will work in class by performing the connection test on this page.
